Falling Awake by Debrah Martin

FALLING AWAKE:

Magic or madness? Can your dreams really take over your life?

Falling Awake is the story of a book and the power of imagination to turn two lives upside down.

When Mary Parker finds an unusual book everything in her life changes. As she reads, she dreams, and the quiet, repressed woman is transformed.

She gives the book and the phenomenon a name, 'falling awake’. The existence of the book seems to make others act out of character too. Joe’s usually dour father gambles with the factory where Mary works, and Joe, the romantic daydreamer, engages in a sexual eternal triangle to keep the dull routine of the accounts department at bay. The dominant partner in the triangle is Clem; dark and dangerous.

Extricating himself from Clem, Joe meets Mary. They fall in love and marry in haste when Mary falls pregnant, but this is no happy ever after tale. Their joy turns to misery when Mary miscarries and she turns inward to her darkening 'falling awake' world. Then Joe's father dies, and he has to fight for control of the factory. He falls into Clem’s clutches again, and to make things worse, he believes Mary is going mad, and the people and places she remembers all just dreams dreamt inside her insanity. But then how can Joe remember them too?

Magic or madness?

For Mary and Joe, the impossible - or the deadly - might only be a breath away.

Falling Awake is a brain teaser, an atmospheric mystery, an exposition of madness; an examination of the impossible, a fantasy, a ghost story, a psychological thriller, a love story, and a story of intrigue and sudden death. It will keep you awake at night, wondering, and pausing during the day, questioning …

One editor has already described it as:

“In the best traditions of Audrey Niffenegger and Carlos Ruiz Zafón…”

And others comment:

“…one of the most original, quirky manuscripts I’ve read for a long time…”

“…I especially like the fairy-tale and myth undertones that creep in from time to time throughout the novel: Sleeping Beauty clutching her book with echoes of Snow White in her glass coffin, the transformative red mac with its Red Riding Hood connotations, Mary’s Cinderella transformation from emotionally abused child to confident woman, the mermaid dress, Mariam’s Scheherazade dance, and especially the gambler as Rumpelstiltskin…”

“…a light, authoritative touch with both …story and characters.”

Book trailer:

Read an excerpt from Falling Awake –

‘What is life? An illusion, a shadow, a story.’

Pedro Calderon de la Barca

Prologue

No-one could sleep forever.

But apparently she could. It was the unusual challenge to the premise that had brought him here against the inclination to evade responsibility and slip home to his own dreams. She’d slept continuously for days now, without the need for water or sustenance; her only requirement, seemingly, a book. He peered curiously through the viewing panel as the attendant hovered behind him.

‘That’s her,’ the attendant announced as if pulling a rabbit from a hat. ‘Mary Parker.’

‘She’s very pretty,’ the tall young man declared, deep blue eyes narrowing to slits as he studied her. The woman’s long red hair cascaded over the side of the bed like blood streaming to the floor, her face a marble effigy of life. She reminded him of Millais’ Ophelia as she floated downstream on her layette of wild flowers – except this frozen beauty was merely asleep, not dead. He wondered what she was dreaming about. She seemed very familiar in a strange half-forgotten way.

‘Yeah, she is – and quiet now, but she weren’t once. Blimey – you should have seen her then, screaming and hollering. Wasn’t until we found that old book and gave it back to her that she shut up.’ The attendant picked at his nails and watched the tall young man lean in closer still. The corner of a book poked out from under the tightly clasped hands. ‘Then she just slept,’ the attendant added, shrugging his shoulders.

‘What’s its significance?’ the young man asked. He could just make out a title scrawled longhand across its spine. He wondered if the woman had written it on herself. He could only decipher the first word – ‘Falling’.

‘Not a clue, Mister; it’s just an empty book.’ The attendant shifted impatiently, as if tired of waiting, then asked, ‘How’d you know her again?’ He flipped the visitors’ page back to read the tall young man’s entry.

22nd Sept ’92: Time in – 5.45pm. John Hathorne, Director: Geo. Tooley & Sons.

‘I don’t really. She worked at the factory, that’s all. We have to be seen as caring employers so I’m here to check on her before we sign her off the books.’ He paused. Now he came to think of it he might have met her once. There had been a girl with bright red hair like hers the day he’d been shown round the factory. He’d been surprised by her scarlet mac because of the colour clash. He dragged himself from his reverie.

‘You said she had no family?’

‘Nope, apparently the mother died a while back and the neighbours say she’s been a bit odd ever since. Before they brought her in here she was wandering the graveyard down the road babbling about how she couldn’t find herself any more. Shame – when you got no-one.’

‘How do you think she can do it?’

‘What?’

‘Not eat or drink for so long – just sleep.’

‘Beats me. Maybe she’s not really there and we’re just imagining her.’ The young man stared at him. The attendant laughed. ‘Only joking. You done then?’ The attendant looked expectantly at him, and the young man found himself involuntarily offering his business card before collecting his briefcase and coat.

‘I suppose I could see if I can do something to help her if she comes back to the land of the living.’

The attendant turned the card over and read aloud, ‘Bespoke leisure wear and stage costumiers; themed event supplies a speciality.’ He studied the tall young man. ‘Versions of reality, huh? You’ll be getting a lot of custom soon, then.’ He sniggered. Outside the midweek rush hour traffic distantly hooted on its way home. The light had dimmed to the half-dusk of early autumn, but fallen leaves and skeletal trees said winter was already in the air.

The tall young man had spotted the now redundant leather straps on the side of the bed when he’d been trying to decipher the title of the book. The reddening round her wrists indicated where no doubt they’d been clasped until recently. ‘Halloween does tend to be a busy time,’ he agreed, suddenly uneasy. The place was oppressive and the sight of the comatose and confined woman depressed him. ‘Such a waste. Will she ever recover, do you think?’

‘Don’t know, mister. Not sure if she’s actually ill. Probably just the stresses of life – grief and disappointment. They do strange things to us, don’t they? Perhaps if she had someone to look after her, she’d get well again, but then who knows when anyone recovers from life.’ He laughed mirthlessly. ‘Maybe it’s better to just dream?’ The tall young man considered the idea for a while.

‘No, reality is always better, no matter how hard.’

He went back to the viewing window and studied the young woman for a few minutes more before gathering up the Essex County Gazette he’d brought with him and stuffing it under the arm carrying the briefcase. The pages creased and he made to flatten them, but stopped abruptly and tossed the paper back on the table the attendant had been sitting at when he’d arrived. He peered at his hand as if there was something wrong with it before shaking his head. The attendant cleared his throat meaningfully and opened the unit’s outer door.

‘I hope her dreams are sweet,’ the young man added sadly as the attendant ushered him out. The attendant flicked the light off and the room behind them sank back into shadow.

Neither saw the frozen figure thaw, stir, and open her eyes – deep green pools of luminescence. They fixed on the door and she listened intently to the low rumble of the tall young man’s voice as he made his goodbyes. The marble features creased to a frown and the slack body tensed. The book still clutched in her hand shivered.

‘No!’ she murmured. ‘No, no, no!’

Excerpt:

Annmar scrunched back into her pillow. This wasn’t a cat. The face was too pointed, never mind the sleek body three times as long as it was tall. Yet when she looked into its face, the familiar eyes belonged to…

“Daeryn?”

Eyes squinting, the animal’s ears pressed flat. Its head sank, giving a little jerk up and down.

Had he…nodded? “That is you.” Daeryn. This was a polecat. Her drawings had been correct, but not the same as seeing one uninjured, acting normal. Or as normal as a polecat in someone’s bed would act.

She pressed her fingertips to her temples. Oh, Lord, just stop thinking already. But her head didn’t hurt, her vision wasn’t cloudy, and neither were her thoughts. She lowered her hands and looked around to confirm they were alone before fixing her gaze on…him. “What are you doing in my room?”

His shoulders lifted.

That was a shrug. He half-crouched and jumped to the foot of the bed, then to the floor, all before she knew that’s what he had in mind. He disappeared behind the end of her bedstead.

She half-sat up, and as she started swinging her legs around, a hand pulled down the extra quilt that hung on the end of her bed. Annmar gasped and scooted under her covers. A moment later, Daeryn’s tousled brown hair came into view. The quilt swung through the air, and he stood, the fabric draped over his shoulders and held closed in the front.

He squinted at her, his expression the same as the polecat’s, looking very sleepy. “Sorry,” he muttered. “Didn’t mean to surprise you.”

What was she supposed to say to that? He’d been in her room. Sleeping in her room. In her bed! Oh, Lord, what would Mother… Nothing. Mother wasn’t around to worry about anymore, as Mary Clare had pointed out. Annmar had no one to answer to, Blighted Basin society included. Their lack of rules completely befuddled her. How did these people function?

Still. This was highly improper. She glared at him, and he seemed to shrink beneath the quilt, drawing it closer to his body. He was likely naked.

She heated, the blush running from her chest up over her face and…down. Thinking of it just brought on more heat. Mercy, in her bed. Had he been…

“You…uh, you haven’t been in…here as…” She swallowed.

His eyes widened, and he shook his head vehemently. “Only as a polecat.” He took a step back. “I wouldn’t do that… Not to you.” He turned and walked to the door. “I’ll leave.”

Yes, he most certainly was naked under there, and a part of her was curious. She was nineteen, a grown woman. Her first look at him had been brief—she swallowed—but good. “Hold on a minute,” she gasped.

He paused in the open doorway and half-turned to face her.

“I don’t understand what you’re doing in my room.”

“Sleeping here.”

“Why?”

His brows and shoulders lifted at the same time. He looked as confused as she felt when he stepped out and closed the door.

This scene is from the opening part of the book.
Deep in the shadows outside a ruined warehouse, Senth Antonello shoved back the hood of his sensor-blocking cloak and fanned himself. The Thieves' Guild tech let him hide from copbot scans, but it didn't cool him. Sweat beaded on his skin. Using his fangs, he unfastened first one glove, then the other, and peeled them off. He tucked them into one of dozens of hidden pockets in the cloak, and wiped his face.
The faint sound of gang chant carried in the chilled night air. Gangs in the Crooktown District hunted mixed breeds like him. At first glance, Senth appeared human, but with his catlike eyes and fangs, no one could miss his Kin nature. In moonlight, his eyes would glow.
The chant grew louder, along with the sound of breaking glass. The deeper darkness that followed meant two things: another streetlight had met its end, and that gang was closer than Senth had thought.
"You come down here, I skin you." Senth flattened himself against the brick wall. "I skin you, the Grand Master skins me. Let's do each other a favor, huh, boys?”
Worse, the Grand Master would inform Senth's Sen'dai. His guild master. The crime lord all the other crime lords feared. The Man. The Harbinger. Luc Saint-Cyr.
The Guild didn't accept non-humans, unless they were enslaved to a human member. No one could rise past level ten, unless related to a human member. Guild-arranged marriages and adoptions happened regularly. To keep the Guild happy, Saint-Cyr was Senth's lord and master and his adoptive father.
No way Senth wanted the Man angry with him. The last time, he'd almost…
Senth shook off the thought, drew his hood forward again, and edged around the corner into a darker alley. "Ffffftt!" The Kin cuss word hissed past his fangs. Where was Khyff? He had to be close. Senth had looked for hours. His HalfKin sense of smell caught a faint whiff of male, mixed with... He took another sniff. Someone--or something—else.
Pressed against the wall, Senth slipped around a corner, and hunkered down. He melted into the concealing darkness behind a barrel, and narrowed night-sensitive eyes.
His human half-brother leaned against the opposite wall of the trash-strewn alley. Khyffen Antonello's blond hair shone in the muted light. A female pinned him, arms around his neck. She tore open Khyff's shirt and ran her hands over his chest.
Senth folded himself into the tight space behind the barrel and settled in to wait. Protection of his brother went before any assignment. Family came first. At least tonight.
Senth's mother had died after birthing him. Khyff, who'd been three, had been told Senth was dead, and Khyff had been sold into slavery. Neither of them knew the other lived until a month ago. Neither had a clue about their biological fathers. Until Khyff found him, Senth's "family" consisted of the Man.
Pulling out a square of paper, Senth angled it to catch the dim light and read the words he'd copied from Saint-Cyr's note once more. You and Khyffen meet me at The Ghost. I have a job for you. Do it and I'll buy and free your brother, but it's going to cost you.
Of course it would. The Man didn't do anything for free. But if it got Khyff out of that hellhole, Senth would do it. He tucked away the note, and slipped on his gloves.
Senth's master had raised him to believe that no one should have to sell his body to survive. Saint-Cyr owned one slave, Senth, and only so he could rise within the Guild.
Senth and Saint-Cyr might not agree on much, but they both believed Khyff needed his freedom. But with Khyff's record, freeing him wouldn't be cheap, and it wouldn't be easy.

This scene is between Khyff and his brother Senth, and Senth's fiancé NarrAy. They are discussing a Kin female. Kin are feline humanoids, and Senth is a mix of Kin and human. It begins with Senth speaking.
"Khyff, I think she had a thing for you, Bro.”
Khyff snorted. "Like I'd ever want a mangy Kin.”
"Mangy?" Senth's brows lowered. "Did you forget who you're talking to?”
NarrAy moved out from between them and around to the other end of the island.
"We've been over this, Sen." Khyff heard the impatient ring in his own voice and tried to curb it, without success. Fatigue clawed at his reserves of energy. "You look almost human. Why do you want to be accepted by those animals, anyway?”
"Kin aren't animals, Khyff. We've been over that, too.”
"Yes, they are." He fought the rage threatening to strangle his thoughts. "They tried to kill you the minute you were born. They didn't want you. They hated you on sight.”
"You mean you hated me, Khyff. You didn't want me." Senth stood, shoving the stool out of the way. "If it weren't for me being a half-breed, your mother might still be alive.”
"Our mother." He leaped to his feet. "She cried over you for days when the Kin stole you from her. Nothing I said or did made any difference." Khyff braced both hands on the counter. "I was a child, Sen. I couldn't help her, but I didn't know that then. I thought it was my fault. All I knew was because of you, they threw us out, and Mama wouldn't stop crying. She abandoned me because of you.”
NarrAy gasped and covered her mouth, eyes welling with tears. "Oh, Khyff. I'm so sorry you were hurt like that.”
All the strength drained out of him, taking the anger with it. He sat.
Senth slid a hand across the table and touched the tips of his fingers to Khyff's. With a male economy of words, that expressed enough. Both forgave.
NarrAy sidestepped around the counter and lifted her arms to Khyff for a hug.
He enfolded her in a warm, safe embrace, arms wrapped all the way around her tiny frame. He drew her between his knees and pressed his face against her neck.
Two years before, she'd rescued him after a savage attack that had landed him in the hospital. Since then, he'd allowed no one but her to touch him. Senth got a rare handshake.
He relished the pressure of her gentle arms around him, the rapture of her skin against his. Khyff risked chemical dependence, holding her. Even with short exposure, the touch of a Better addicted. She'd accidentally addicted him once, and he'd suffered while weaning himself. His brother could never leave this woman. Never love another. Senth was hers.
By new laws passed recently, NarrAy must cover her entire body in public. Khyff shouldn't risk addiction again. Shouldn't let her touch him. Shouldn't... He hugged her closer.
Her touch soothed, tranquilized. How anyone could expect a woman as loving as NarrAy to hide from the world? She wasn't dangerous. Already, the darkness of Khyff's soul was lifting, evaporating. Fading. How could he have forgotten how wonderful she smelled? How sweet she was? How comforting it was to be held?
The teapot whistled.
"I'll get it, Khyff." NarrAy stepped back.
The absence of her touch left Khyff bereft. Dropped him back into his darkness. He turned away. Careful not to let Senth see it, Khyff clutched one hand over his heart.

Chained Melodies: a startling transgender story to rival The Danish Girl:
Chained Melodies is the story of two men, three people and the meaning of love.

ChainedMelodiesEngland in the 1960s: Will Robinson and Tom Wilson are just two ordinary boys – best friends, But Will and Tom will grow up to be very different people to the schoolboys who scrumped apples and scraped knees together. By the time they’re in their twenties, Tom has experienced death and disillusionment whilst serving in Northern Ireland and is questioning everything he ever believed in. Will has discovered he’s living in the wrong body. It takes courage to face the truth, but it takes a different kind of courage to live with it. Tom and Will find that courage through each other – and an unexpected kind of love. Chained Melodies tells Will, Tom and Billie’s stories – an echo of Lili Elbe’s, and a foreshadowing of Caitlyn Jenner’s.

Chained Melodies was first released in early 2013 to critical acclaim as Chained Melody, but has been out of print for the last year. Reviewers commented on the first release:

“…a beautiful book about love, acceptance and self-discovery …”
“…truly a must read …”
“…it's not a transsexual love story, it's a love story that happens to feature transsexuals. The author did an amazing job making the characters three-dimensional and their self-discovery journey is transforming not just for them, but the reader too.”

It has now been updated and revised and is on release from 5th October 2015 under its new title, coincidentally close to the forthcoming limited release of The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne – the story of Lili Elbe, the first male to female SRS, and also mentioned in Chained Melodies. The author worked with members of the transgender community to write the book, and was interviewed on radio with one of them following the original release, which was also linked to the nationally touring portrait exhibition of transgender people titled Living My Life, compiled by Sheffield NHS trust.

What If by Rita Szollos

Today I'm excited to host a stop on the blitz tour for What If by Rita Szollos! This is a romantic comedy and the book is free for for Kindle October 5-9 only! We also have two great giveaways for you at the end of this post!

About the Book:

cover_paperbackWhat If is a romantic comedy and adventure about a black and white photograph.

Ailie Faulkner, a single, 39 year-old woman, married to her work, treasures a black and white photograph, and she’s stored it in her closet for more than a decade. Like a wistful teenager staring adoringly at a poster above her bed, Ailie has spent years returning to this photo again and again, concocting fantasies and daydreams about the photo’s handsome content.

Prone to list making and overall levelheadedness, Ailie usually isn’t one to believe in fate, but her curiosity (ahem, obsession!) with the photograph leads her to a life-changing decision and sends her on an adventure filled with humor, travel, bouts of nausea, unexpected discoveries, and reflections on cooking. Encouraged by her overbearing but obliging mother and an inquisitive grandmother, and guided by the insightful (albeit often contradictory) advice of her best friends, Ailie endeavors to learn about the photo, the person within its frame, and the possibilities of their future.

Add it to your Goodreads shelf &
it's FREE for Kindle, Oct 5-9 only!

Hollie Porter Builds A Raft by Eliza Gordon

Welcome to the release event for Hollie Porter Builds a Raft, the sequel to Must Love Otters by Eliza Gordon! Hollie Porter Builds a Raft is an adult romantic comedy and is now available from online retailers!

About the Book:

raft (noun): when two or more otters rest together,
often holding hands, so they don’t drift apart

Hollie Porter has put her old gig as a 911 operator and sad single girl in an attic-bound box, right where it belongs. She’s rebounded nicely from her run-in with Chloe the Cougar in the wilds of British Columbia, and this new life alongside concierge-in-shining-armor Ryan Fielding? Way more fun. After relocating to Ryan’s posh resort at Revelation Cove, Hollie embarks on an all-new adventure as the Cove’s wildlife experience educator, teaching guests and their kids about otters and orca and cougars, oh my.

When darling Ryan gets down on one NHL-damaged knee and pops the question of a lifetime, Hollie realizes this is where the real adventure begins. It’s all cake tasting, flower choosing, and dress fittings until a long-lost family member shows up at the Cove and threatens to hijack her shiny new life, forcing Hollie to redefine what family means to her. What is she willing to sacrifice to have one of her very own?

As Ryan’s words echo in her head—“Our raft, our rules”—Hollie has to face facts: a raft isn’t always tied together with blood and genetics. Sometimes it’s secured by love and loyalty… and occasional help from the clever creatures that call Revelation Cove home.

Interview with S.M. Blooding

What was your inspiration for this book?

I lost custody of my children. I wasn’t on drugs. I wasn’t an alcoholic. I didn’t try to murder them in any form or fashion. It was a brutal time period for me and I didn’t have any way of dealing with it. I didn’t have anyone to talk to. I was alone and pissed and depressed and I couldn’t get out of that funk.

So, I came up with a character who had experienced something similar and I walked through that with her. As she progressed, so did I. It turned out to be very healing for me.

The way I had to approach that part of the storyline, though, pisses off a lot of readers. Backstory flashbacks. Not ideal. There’s a very fine, legal line I’m straddling there. The approach I took with that part of the storyline has to be written the way it was. That’s something a lot of people don’t understand about the writing process. Legality. I had to ensure that I didn’t write about things that actually happened, or about people who were actually there. The situation had to be similar, but not the same. That’s harder than it looks.

I’m just hoping enough people follow me through this first book and into the next. Blood Moon Magick has no catch-up scenes. Everything flows a lot better and I certainly enjoy where it’s headed! And Barrel of Whiskey? O.M.W! (Oh My Word) It’s GOOD!

What scene in the book are you happiest with, and why?

I’m most proud of one of the last scenes in the book, the fight in the warehouse. I had a friend who was a paramedic and on the force. She helped make that scene feel real and gritty. And, boy, it sure does feel real and gritty.

Describe your writing process - are you a plotter (planner) or a pantzer (someone who makes things up as they go along)?

I’m a plotter. I sit down for days working out the main plot, the subplots, the subplots from the previous book that are still open, and the character arcs. I storyboard and I outline.

Do you prepare an outline before you start work on a book?

I do. I have the main outline based off my storyboard. And then I have the chapter outlines. Depending on the story, they can either be a long paragraph of the major plot/subplot/character arc points that need to occur in that chapter.

Or they can be quite simple. “Destroy, destroy, destroy!!!!!!!!!!” in great big font, bold, underlined, and in horrible scribbles.

I handwrite my outlines and my storyboards. I haven’t gotten a handle on that on-line Scrivner storyboard yet.

Do you ever experience writer's block and, if so, how do you manage it?

I do. For me, though, it’s less writer’s block and more just being too dang tired to come up with anything.

I’ve been at this for a while, so I’ve pushed through real writer’s block.  There are exercises you can put yourself through. Write at least a little every day. That all helps. It does. For me, writer’s block is when my muse is just so quiet and it’s still and silent in my head. When I got this, it was because I wasn’t self-confident. I needed others to like my writing to feel confident.

Then I pushed myself through those writer’s prompts and other exercises you’ll find when you Google “Curing Writer’s Block”, and then I published stuff that was written without inspiration, and that, I think, is when I became an author instead of just a writer.

But when you’re just plain ragged, when the only thing you can do is collapse on the floor, the couch, half-way on the bed, whatever, there’s no energy in this universe that procure magical words from the tips of your frelling fingers.

In the past year, I’ve had a lot of life changes. I have a very full life and I am very busy. I have a full-time job as a project manager in the electrical field and right now, I’m on that big VA Hospital project in Denver. So, there’s that. Also, there’s the boyfriend and his two beasts—I mean kids. LOL! Then there’s the entire publishing process.

There’s just so much work to do. It’s important to remember to keep yourself whole, healthy, and safe. Happy? Who cares? Write about it. Pissed? Write about it. But be healthy and safe.

What's the hardest thing about writing for you?

The answer to this question never really changes for me. LOL! I can’t tell you how many interviews I’ve done and this question pops up a lot.

Finding the time.

I’m past the point where I need to be inspired to write. I can tell when I’m not, but it just means it’s a harder edit later. Meh.

I’m an independently published author and I’ve opened my own publishing house, Whistling Book Press. So, when I’m not working at my day job, or turning off the lights for Mr. Dork, or teaching Thing 2 how to wipe her butt for the 100th time, or chasing down Moose, my newest parakeet, because she decided to adventure and got captured by the closet, or reminding Mr. Dork that his job is to teach Thing 1 how not to burn down the kitchen, I’m trying to cram in a good fifteen minutes of writing, or a good half hour of editing on someone’s book, or a good hour working on someone’s cover, or a good two hours on someone’s website.

OR! Investing some good time in researching the market, the changes in the industry, and new promotional ideas.

So, yeah, finding the time.

What do you like most about writing fiction?

Escaping.

Don’t get me wrong, right now, I have a great life. I love it. But! I still love my pretend worlds just a little better. And I think one of the things I love about them is that I get to leave them when I need to. In the Real World, you’re here to stay. Sorry, Charlie, but you’re stuck. In there, I can stay as long as I want.

The only limitations that apply are the ones I place on myself. Now, granted, there are a few readers out there who would appreciate a bit more limitations, but I enjoy it! I can’t write for all of my readers. If I did, they would get bored because I’d be bored. I have to write what thrills me, and, hopefully, that translates into something thrilling for them, as well.

Where you do start when you're developing a new character?

I start with their Who. While writing my Dreamland series, I discovered I think a bit differently than others. When I people watch, they’re not just paper cut-outs. They’re not just strangers walking in my time stream with no effect on me. I look at them and I see PEOPLE. I see a PERSON. I see the fragments of time that might have shaped them.

So, for me, I don’t start with anything more than a general feel for the PERSON they are. Then I scramble for a name that kind of fits them, and then they just…blossom.

What surprised you/what did you learn when you were creating this novel?

Well, this novel was written, originally, ten years ago. It’s undergone two publishers, and about, oh gosh, um, twenty-some-odd rewrites? I don’t even remember all the things I learned over the course of this one.

This book was broken into episodes. It wanted to ride that train because I really enjoy reading episodes. They’re faster-paced. We don’t have a great deal of fluff. There’s only room for STORY! It’s a lot like TV, and I love TV. I know. I know. I love reading, too.

But! Episodes are better suited for other genres. The readers of this genre did not appreciate it. A few did! But most did not. Bummer.

Blood Moon Magick and Barrel of Whiskey are the next two books to be released, and they are full books. They’re just as fast, maybe just a tad slower for some more character development, but there’s still not a lot of fat. They’re lean, mean stories.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Put on your Big Boy and Big Girl panties every single day. Writers whine. Writers complain. Writers sulk. Writers throw tantrums on Facebook and Amazon and Goodreads. Authors are frelling super heroes.

Don’t think you have to write every day. If your docket is full, write when you can. Life comes first. Writing is a hobby for a long time before it becomes a full-time job. Treat it like a job if you intend on making it one, but don’t let it consume your life. You’re living the stories you’re going to tell. So, be sure you live something.

Take time for yourself.

Write for yourself. Yes. Writing to trends is sound advice because that’s where the money is. But! Write what you enjoy or you will suck all the enjoyment right out of your soul.

Review of Whiskey Witches by Hannah Rohe

There’s a serial killer on the loose, and the killings are so strange that Detective Paige Whiskey is called in to solve them. Coming from a long line of witches, she’s singularly qualified to deal with sacrificial murders and the strange markings on the bodies of the victims. She soon finds herself in trouble, though, when she realises the bodies were left for her, to lure her into the killer’s hands. She’d thought she had no powers, but when a web of lies comes crumbling down around her ears, Paige is thrown headlong into a danger she could never have anticipated.

I don’t tend to read much paranormal fiction, but the premise of this book really caught my attention. A supernatural detective? A combination of magic and a murder mystery? I’m in.

It’s hard to say too much about the plot without spoiling it, which I really don’t want to do. Whiskey Witches is a rollercoaster of plot twists and surprises, and it had me racing to see what happened next. Pacey and suspenseful, but with a surprising emotional heart. There was no skimping on character – I wanted to know what happened with Paige and her estranged mother as badly as I wanted to know what the killer was after. The episodic structure of the book meant there was plenty of time to explore both character and plot within an episode, without having to cut corners on either.

I was somewhat disappointed that Paige didn’t get more chances to be heroic. It seemed like every time the opportunity arose, she’d get knocked out, or possessed by a demon, or be too emotionally distraught to handle the situation. Her distress had a very good reason, but I feel like she didn’t get the opportunity to use her power, or even her detective skills, to their full extent. Another copy-edit of the manuscript wouldn’t have gone astray, either. I kept getting jarred out of the story by a grammatical error or typo.

This is a great book for anyone with a taste for the supernatural, or a hankering for an unusual detective story. Pacey, emotional, and with moments of startling humour, Whiskey Witches is one to look out for.

Demon's Assistant by Tori Centanni

Welcome to the Demon's Assistant Series blitz tour! The Demon's Assistant Series is by Tori Centanni and is a young adult urban fantasy. Check out the books and enter the giveaway for a $25 Amazon gift card!

TheDemonsDeadline-2About The Demon's Deadline (Demon's Assistant Book 1):

Some teenagers deliver pizza, some deliver newspapers. My part-time job? I deliver mysterious envelopes for a demon. I don’t even get tips.

It seemed like a good deal at the time. I almost died in a car accident, and Azmos saved me… gave me a second chance. At first, it wasn’t so bad. I got to live, go to high school, hang out with my boyfriend Cam. He’s too cute for his own good, but he’s getting tired of all this demon stuff. I hate lying to my best friend Melissa and my dad, who's still not over my mom's death. Neither am I.

But now, this gig is getting dangerous, and it’s not like I can quit. Even if I could, then what? I’ve seen things I can’t unsee. I just hope I can figure out how to navigate the darkness before I do something I can’t undo.

It’s time I face my own demons.
------------------------
About Gabriel's Demons (Demon's Assistant Book 1.5):
My name is Gabriel Price, and I’m no stranger to bad dreams.

After losing my family in a house fire, I suppose it’s normal to have nightmares. Except now, I’m dreaming awake, seeing things I don’t want to see, things I shouldn’t be able to see.

The first time I saw someone’s death, the vision hit me hard, just like the speeding car that crashed, killing its driver. There was nothing I could do to stop it from happening. Not the first time. Or the second. Or the third. But now…I think I might have a chance to prevent my visions from coming true.

It’s a gift to be able to stop someone from dying, right? The demon who’s interested in my ability thinks so, but I’m not about to accept the deal he's offering. My inner demons give me enough hell. I don't need even more.
------------------------
About In the Demon's Company (Demon's Assistant Book 2):
inthedemonscompany-3There’s a new demon in town… …and my boss, Azmos, isn’t happy about it. I guess he doesn’t like competition in the soul-binding business.

Meanwhile, my Chemistry teacher seems to be caught up in this magical mess, so I’m anxious to get to the bottom of what's going on. Now that Az has promoted me from errand girl to demon’s apprentice I might actually be able to do something to help. Of course, my boyfriend Cam wants me to stay out of it, and for once Azmos actually agrees with him.

Sorry, but I can’t just sit around doing homework while a demon is leaving a trail of bodies all over town. Besides, I’ve got my own posse now. Okay, I’ve got an ice-cold death demon, a tortured psychic and a pink-haired demonologist to help me. Together we’ll figure it out, and I’ll prove I’m ready to be a full-fledged apprentice…or I’ll die trying.

Magic happens. Sometimes as writers we are amazed where the story takes us and the lessons we learn along the way. As we researched for our novel we came across an ancient mystery that evoked such wonder in us that we asked ourselves “why isn’t the whole world talking about this?”

We were fascinated by what is known as The Great Year Cycle; a naturally occurring phenomenon written about in thirty-oneancient cultures from China to Mexico. Plato called it the Great Year, the Mayan’s called it the Grand Cycle and in India it has been known as the Yugas for more than five thousand years.

It is common knowledge that the spin of the Earth gives us night and day and the rotation of the earth around the Sun gives us the four seasons, but there is more! There is a ‘wobble’ in the rotation that takes approximately 26, 000 years, composing one Great Year. Like the seasons in a year, the Great Year is divided in to four phases: the Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. These periods are characterized by a rise and fall in human consciousness. In the Golden Age human consciousness experiences full enlightenment and then declines through the ages losing consciousness and causing destruction, war and disconnect.

We weave these secrets through the extraordinary lifetimes of our characters and consider: what if reincarnation is real? Marcus has past life memory and his soul mate Theron does not. As the Dark Age climaxes our hero leads the way in ensuring the ascension toward the Golden Age but he is not alone. Hisarch enemy Helghul and the other Adversaries have devastating plans for the world and are determined to expand the darkness, fear and doubt indefinitely. One Great Year makes a quantum leap, weaving ancient wisdom, modern discoveries and an alternative world history together creating a dynamic novel series.

One Great Year is an award winning fantasy novel that has been optioned for Hollywood development. The second book in The Great Year Series is due for release in early 2016. We want to thank all of our readers for their amazing posts, emails, reviews and support. We cannot wait to share Book II in The Great Year Series. If you haven’t read One Great Year yet, don’t wait! People keep telling us “You will read it when you are ready.” Are you ready?

About the Book:
An epic, thought-provoking tale of reincarnation, love, and the struggle of good against evil.

As the world descends from a Golden Age into darkness and brutality, Marcus has been reincarnated an exhausting number of times. Selected to become an Emissary, it is his duty to protect the ancient secrets. His adventure is heightened because he secretly consumes a serum that allows him to have memory from one lifetime to the next. In doing so, he sets himself up for thousands of years of torment, loneliness, and searching.

Desperate to never forget his soulmate, Theron, and never sure if he was truly meant to be an Emissary, Marcus struggles through lifetimes to overcome his cruel and powerful nemesis, Helghul.

Fusing the adventure of Indiana Jones with the introspection and wisdom of Eckhart Tolle, One Great Year takes readers on an epic journey through history, following characters who are born and reborn as they struggle to triumph over evil.

Excerpt:
An eerie, buzzing noise startled both women. Everyone in the restaurant stopped speaking, and the waiters huddled together near the entrance. One of the chefs came out of the kitchen and headed toward the waiters. The noise continued for almost a minute and then abruptly stopped.
“The aliens have landed,” the man joked at the next table.
Everyone laughed and resumed speaking. The chef went back to the kitchen, and the waiters resumed their tasks.
“Wonder what that was?” Barbara’s voice quavered.
But Belinda wasn’t listening. Her right hand trembled as she glanced down at her phone. She flashed the phone at Barbara, who gasped when she read the short message: Mermaid arriving in Carden. Enroute from Toronto.
Belinda grabbed Barbara’s arm. “You must contact Graham at once. Before she arrives.”
“He’s somewhere on the highway between Windsor and here. I can’t tell him everything over the phone.” Barbara thought back to the previous morning when she had awakened to the tickle of a beautiful red rose. As soon as she opened her eyes, Graham kissed her passionately and apologized once more for leaving her with the last-minute details of the engagement party, but it couldn’t be helped. One of his clients had expressed interest in a series of paintings, and Graham was anxious to close the sale.
You must tell him before she arrives,” Belinda said sharply.
“Who is she?”
“She could be anyone from the tribe, anyone at all.” Belinda threw the phone into her purse.
“That strange sound came from your phone?”
“That’s how the underwater Kingdom communicates with me.” Belinda drummed her fingers on the table. “Usually, I get more details, but—”
Barbara wondered about the phone that could easily have been purchased on Earth. Like all other digital devices from the mermaid Kingdom, it did not stand out in any way. She wondered if any other ex-mermaids had such a phone but quickly dismissed that possibility. Unlike Belinda, they were not Bellas so it wouldn’t make sense to entrust them with a direct link to the Kingdom.
“It may not be so bad,” Barbara said. “It might be nice to have another ex-mermaid in our midst.”
“You’re making the assumption that she will be pleased to see you.”

Clockwork Menagerie by Karen Kincy - Birthday Celebration

Happy Birthday!
Karen Kincy

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to—

Oh, wait, I’m sharing my birthday? Right! This September 1st means I get one more year and one
more book. Clockwork Menagerie, a companion novella to my Shadows of Asphodel series, comes out today. The story follows the archmage Konstantin into Russia during the bitter winter of 1914. If you know Konstantin, you won’t be surprised when he gets into trouble with technomancy, clockwork beasts, and a certain handsome airship captain.

Since today happens to be a double birthday, we need cake. Myself, I’m partial to chocolate mint cake with a rich glaze, which my mom bakes upon request. Konstantin, on the other hand, lives and works in Vienna, Austria. He loves the famous sachertorte, chocolate filled with apricot, though he’s secretly the most fond of strawberry torte for his birthday cake.

Who doesn’t love birthday presents? Konstantin daydreams about all the mechanical trinkets and upgrades he could acquire for his laboratory. He hopes that someone will research the latest in technomancy equipment and buy him something cutting edge and dangerous. Though sadly none
of his friends will buy him a gift that might literally blow up in his face.

As for me, I’m pretty bad at guessing about birthday presents. I keep telling people they can always get me more books, but they point to my swaybacked bookshelves and mutter something about me having “too many,” which is obviously impossible. Konstantin would agree with me, though he tends to read more nonfiction than fiction.

When is Konstantin’s birthday? That’s a secret in the books, but I’ll go ahead and tell you it’s February 13. The day before Valentine’s Day, which means blackmail material for more presents. Not that Konstantin would ever do anything so diabolical—he limits his schemes to bigger and better experiments, never mind that they often backfire.

Happy birthday, Clockwork Menagerie, and go party with readers!

1914. Konstantin would love to hide in his laboratory and dissect the clockwork dragon captured from Russia, but the Archmages of Vienna have other plans. He finds himself shipped off to St. Petersburg as the scientific attaché to an ambassador. His orders? Look, but don't touch. Of course, he considers this an impossible request with so much enemy technomancy to explore.

To make matters worse, Konstantin has to work with the dashing zeppelin commander Himmel, a man who should also be untouchable. They can't act on the smoldering attraction between them without risking it all. Faced with an illegal relationship and a devious rival technomancer, Konstantin might not return from this mission in Russia without conquering the forbidden.
